It’s Poetry Day! It’s National Poetry Day!
Cause Poetry! is relevant and fun
and sure to turn up on the BBC

on 4, or 2 or (Duffy willing!) 1!
Joanna Lumley’s written a haiku
while Paxman asks in a beligerent tone

if poetry’s as dead as Bernard Matthews—
It’s live and beautiful, replies James Blunt.
It’s relevant, it takes on modern issues

and just for one day, it is on the front
of every local rag and student journal,
reporting on our crazy poetry stunts

like poetry rollerblading! Poetry Netball!
Look, Andrew Motion’s playing!  See him laugh!
So banish thoughts of Mayakovsky’s pistol,

and if you’re on the news, don’t mention Plath.
